Forever Chemicals Found in Feathers of Antarctica’s Penguins, New Study Reveals

Sixteen different PFAS compounds have turned up in the feathers of Adélie, Gentoo, and Emperor penguins, showing that industrial pollution has reached even one of the most remote wildlife populations on Earth.

What the Study Found

A research team led by George Mason University tested feathers collected from penguins at three Antarctic sites, the Henryk Arctowski Polish Antarctic Station, King George Island, and the Chilean General Bernardo O’Higgins Station, screening for 38 different PFAS compounds. According to the published study, all three penguin species tested positive, with 16 distinct PFAS compounds detected across the samples.

Emperor penguins carried the highest concentrations of the chemicals, followed by Gentoo penguins, then Adélie penguins. Researchers found that contamination levels varied by the birds’ age and location, but diet emerged as the strongest overall driver, tracking closely with prey type, feeding behavior, and each species’ position in the food chain.

Why Feathers Make a Good Record

Feathers are built from keratin, a protein that many PFAS compounds bind to readily, making them a useful, minimally invasive way to track chemical exposure in wild birds over time. The approach let researchers build a contamination profile without needing to draw blood or handle the penguins extensively.

Purdue University ecotoxicologist Maria Sepulveda, who was not involved in the study, said prior PFAS research had largely overlooked this part of Antarctica because of how difficult the region is to reach. Researchers had also long assumed the continent was too isolated for the chemicals to arrive at all.

“We don’t have anywhere on this planet where we don’t have these chemicals,” Sepulveda said.

How Pollution Reaches a Continent With No Industry

PFAS, short for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, were developed in the late 1930s for their resistance to heat, water, and grease, and have since been used widely in products such as food packaging and nonstick cookware. According to historical health research, the compounds were already turning up in human blood by the late 1950s, with scientists linking them to serious health harms by the 1960s and ’70s. Researchers believe the chemicals travel through the atmosphere and settle onto Antarctica through rain, snow, sea spray, and ocean currents, continuing to move once they reach the water. Global PFAS production now exceeds a million tonnes a year, even as regulators in various countries push to phase the chemicals out.

PFAS have been linked to a range of health problems in humans, including reproductive, immune, and neurological issues, along with certain cancers at high exposure levels. Researchers say it remains unclear whether the contamination found in the penguins is causing similar harm, since this study did not assess the birds’ physiological or health effects.

What It Means Going Forward

The findings add Antarctic seabirds to a growing list of species now carrying a chemical signature with no clean point of origin. According to the research announcement, the discovery underscores how far the reach of forever chemicals has outpaced scientific understanding of what the contamination is actually doing to the animals that carry it.
