How to Spot the Queen Bee

A honey bee queen is noticeably different from her workers. She has a longer, more tapered abdomen that extends past her wings, a smaller thorax in comparison to her body length, and she moves more slowly and deliberately, usually surrounded by a small circle of worker bees attending to her.

Why Do Honey Bees Die After Stinging, But Wasps Don’t?

This injury is fatal to the honey bee. Wasps, along with bumble bees and most other bees, have smooth stingers without barbs, allowing them to sting repeatedly without harming themselves.

It’s also worth knowing that only female bees can sting at all. A stinger is a modified egg-laying organ, so male bees, across every species, simply don’t have one. If a bee flying around you is a male, it is physically incapable of stinging, regardless of how defensive it seems.

The Life Cycle of a Bee

Nearly all bees, whether social or solitary, go through the same four life stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. What differs between species is timing and setting.

  • Egg: A female lays a single egg on a mass of stored pollen and nectar, usually inside a nest cell she has built or sealed herself.
  • Larva: The egg hatches into a small, worm-like larva that feeds on the stored food until it’s ready to develop further.
  • Pupa: The larva forms a cocoon or protective covering and undergoes metamorphosis, developing wings, legs, and its adult body shape.

Most solitary native bees live for only a few weeks as adults, just long enough to mate, build a nest, and provision it with food for the next generation, then die before their offspring even hatch. Honey bee workers typically live five to six weeks in summer, while a queen honey bee can live for several years.

What Do Bees Do in Winter?

Different bees handle cold weather in very different ways. Honey bee colonies survive winter as a group. Workers cluster tightly around the queen inside the hive, vibrating their flight muscles to generate heat, and rotate positions so no single bee stays on the cold outer edge too long. They live off stored honey through the coldest months.

Bumble bee colonies, by contrast, don’t survive winter at all, except for a single new queen. In late fall, she mates and then burrows into loose soil or leaf litter to enter a dormant state called diapause, essentially a deep hibernation, while the rest of her colony dies off. She emerges alone in spring to start an entirely new colony.

Most solitary native bees spend winter as fully developed adults inside sealed nest cells, underground or in wood and stems, waiting for warmer temperatures to trigger their emergence in spring.

If you notice a sudden cluster of dead or dying bees on a porch or windowsill, especially in late fall or after a cold snap, this is usually a natural die-off, older worker bees whose lifespan has simply ended, or bees that got chilled and couldn’t make it back to warmth.
